The shortwave albedo for natural soils (unsealed soils) and water is calculated inside ENVI-met using the soil wetness and the sun elevation angle respectively. You can set these value to “0.00” in the database.

For soil profiles with a sealed soil at the uppermost layer, you must enter a valid albedo in the database.

Purpose

Buildings are active elements of the model area, therefore a number of data is required to simulate then correctly.

In this version, the same settings are applied to each building. It is not possible to define different thermal properties or colours for a single house. This is still future work.

This initial wind field calculation ensures that most of the features of the flow field are well developed before the main calculation routine is started.

The time of 10 sec was set more or less arbitrarily and is a compromise of time spend and maximum obtainable effect.

Defining Alias MYALIAS.DAT

What are Alias?

Alias are keywords that can be used instead of directory names. Whenever ENVI-met expects information about the location of a certain file, an alias can be used instead of typing the complete path to that file.
In older versions, alias have already been used in ENVI-met to point for example to the default input (alias=[INPUT]) or the output (=[OUTPUT]) directory. From version 3.1 on, you are able to define your own list of alias.

To separate the chars belonging to different grid points, ENVI-met uses the so-called format ID.

This ID defines, how many chars are interpreted as one value in the matrix blocks. This is necessary because no other dividing information such as space is provided in these blocks.

The lateral boundary conditions types (LBC) define the way ENVI-met handles the model boundaries.

Purpose

Besides of calculating pure meteorological data, ENVI-met also includes a simple biometeorological model to predict the thermal comfort inside the model area. The PMV (predicted mean vote) model is probably the best know biomet model. Based on Fangers (1972) model, it relates the energy balance of the human body to the personal comfort feeling of persons exposed to the corresponding climates.

Receptors are selected points inside the model area, where processes in the atmosphere and the soil are monitored in detail.

Defining receptors in ENVI-met works in two ways: You can define receptors inside the model area input file (*add link*) as well as in the .CN file. Although both methods have their strengths, defining receptors in the .CF File is basically kept for compatibility r…

For every grid in the area, a soil profile and surface material can be chosen individually.

There are two ways to provide this information:

Case A: Each grid in the domain has the same soil profile

In this case no individual information is needed for each single grid point.

Purpose

Solar adjustment is a new feature of ENVI-met 3.1. It allows to adjust the shortwave solar radiation calculated by ENVI-met to your situation.

For certain locations it might be the case that the solar energy fluxes estimated by the internal methods of ENVI-met are systematically too high or too low. In this case, you can adjust these values from 50% to 150% of the value calculated by ENVI-met.

Introduction

ENVI-met allows to simulate the release and dispersion of gases and particles. To used this option, you must add Sources to the Area Input File.

At the moment, all sources in the model must be of the same type, e.g. they all have to be S02 sources. You cannot have for example one SO

Purpose

In former versions, the main time step was fixed to 10s. It has turned out that this time step can be too large for certain cases which causes troubles in form of numerical instabilities. Therefore, ENVI-met provides now a dynamic adaptation of the main time step. The criteria for time step selection is the height of the sun.

Purpose

This section interacts with the internal turbulence model. ENVI-met allows you to select between the prognostic 1.5order E-Epsilon closure model (default) and the diagnostic 1st order mixing length model.

Problems with the E-Epsilon model from former versions are mainly resolved, so that the usage of the 1.5order closure model is highly recommended.

During initialisation, only the TKE and the e equation are iteratively solved without a feedback to Km.

After both equations have become stable, the Km feedback is introduced into the system.

This method reduces the risk of numerical oscillations during the sensible initialisation phase.

Wind Field Diastrophy

The purpose of the Wind Field Diastrophy is to progress slowly from an undisturbed flow in the model area to a flow around the structure.

To obtain this the buildings are made “solid” in 3 steps:
In the first step (100%), the wind speed at the facades equals the free flow velocity,
in the second (50%) it is half the free stream velocity
and in the final step (0%) the wind speed is zero at the building walls which is the normal condition.
